How to achieve ASML cleanliness requirements with wire EDM

Choosing between two evils is how you could label the dilemma that wire EDMs have when they make parts for the high-vacuum part of ASML's machines. When they cut with coated brass wire, they have a stable process with good speed. But zinc and copper particles settle on the surface, leading to rejection because of cleanliness requirements. The alternative so far is cutting with molybdenum or tungsten wire. But this wire is stiff, breaks quickly, cuts slowly and is up to about 20 times more expensive than coated brass wire.
